Reflective Journal: Community Profiling Event in Kampung Balok

On 29 December 2024, our class Usrah in Action 1 of section 870 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaleha binti Kassim, conducted a community activity in Kampung Balok, Pahang. The activity we conducted was to raise awareness amongst the residents of Kampung Balok regarding the horseshoe crabs and mangroves in the area of Kampung Balok.

We managed a lot of activities to bond with the residents such as playing bingo and doing light dancing exercises. This activity helped to lift the spirits of the residents and made us, the hosts, get closer with the residents. After the activities, we conduct a survey on the residents, enquiring them about their personal details, such as their livelihoods and families, and then we ask them about their backgrounds and opinions regarding the preservation of the mangroves habitat in Kampung Balok. We also chat with the residents and gain deeper insights about what Kampung Balok looked like in the past and their memories of it. From our conversation, we learned that preserving the flora and fauna in Kampung Balok is important so the next generation of residents of Kampung Balok can enjoy the beauty and wonder of the flora and fauna in Kampung Balok.

We learned a lot from our community activity in Kampung Balok. We learn to appreciate the importance of preserving and conserving the natural habitat in our own country. We also learned that it is important to cooperate with the local people of our target area so we could work together by raising awareness about the issues. I am glad I could become a part of the committee for this event, as this event proved to be a stepping stone towards preservation of the local flora and fauna for the future.
